Colorado Mini Classic Chief Referee Communiqué #4

This is not a typical CR Communiqué posted at a race venue. Nor is it like most that are seen on the ACA website.  No penalties or warning are to be found below.  Rather this is a comment on the general demeanor of those racers who participated in the Mini Classic and the parents and friends who supported them.

This is only the third time that I have been an official at an event that juniors’ categories have been included and the only one where they were the featured participants.  I have no children of my own and I was, frankly, a bit concerned about the possibility of encountering problems like those shown on TV where youth participants or their parents are seen confronting officials for a variety of reasons.

I was, therefore, pleasantly surprised and greatly impressed by the good sportsmanship of both racers and their supporters at the Colorado Mimi Classic.  The racers were cordial, willing and even eager to listen to directions and quick to take responsibility for instances when they did not comply with race rules.  Moreover, the parents and supporters of the racers were also very polite, enthusiastic and willing to help in any way they could.  Even when they saw something that they may have disagreed with, they were respectful in their approach to dealing with the issue.

I have co-promoted a Seniors’ stage race for the past five years and it is always gratifying when the dozen or so racers out of 300-400 who participate stop by during the race and say thanks.   Amazingly, during the course of the Colorado Mini Classic I would bet that fully 30% of the racers approached me, thanked me for helping with the race and offered their hand for a firm and sincere handshake!

Finally, I would like to compliment those parents and supporters who offered their insights to me on junior racing.  Those conversations, albeit brief due to the pace of the racing, allowed me to learn how to be a better official and to make racing safer for the participants, the spectators and residents of the area.

So thanks to all you racers and supporters who made the Colorado Mini Classic a memorable experience for me.

Sincerely,

Kim Viner

Chief Referee
